![]() Dynamic resilience is now a daily refrain that keeps me moving forward while breathing deeply. To accomplish each we will need to remain resilient while continuing to pinpoint opportunities for change. Even with progess being made-I’ll dub them windfalls of hopefulness-there remains the ongoing important work towards racial equity, inclusivity and my personal objective of identifying and securing more permanent arts space in the SF Bay Area. The city estimates this will add more than $15 million in arts funding (through Grants for the Arts and the San Francisco Arts Commission) over the next two years. When in place, this new legislation will dedicate 1.5 percent of the base hotel tax - a 14 percent tax levied on hotel stays in San Francisco - to support arts and culture programs. Prop E, with the tag line “arts for everyone,” passed with a whopping 74.28% of the vote. In San Francisco a significant Proposition that would impact arts funding was decided on. And: Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland will be the first Native American women to serve in Con- gress Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar will be the first Muslim women to serve Ayanna Pressley and Jahana Hayes will be the first black women to represent Massachusetts and Con- necticut in Congress. And part and parcel to this good news is that in next year’s session of Congress, there will be over 100 women in the House for the first time in history. This is largely due to the results of the mid-term elections in November, which provided major wins locally and nation- ally-good news that was needed and deserved. I’m breathing deeper, smiling more and sleeping. Society is increasingly aware of the environmental issues that plague our world today thus hopefully leading to measures and policies that encourage AFS proper appreciation as a productive, sustainable and environmentally friendly landscape management strategy.Kinetech Arts, Dec 2 photo by Robbie Sweeny Partnerships among private and public institutions/ organizations are vital for proper implementation of landscape management strategies including AFS. Farmer’s associations and rural movements can be instrumental in grouping needs and obtaining fair value for products through certification or other mechanisms. Government subsidies are needed similarly to conventional agriculture, with AFS contributing important environmental services which should be part of the financial equation. Emphasis is placed on the value of indigenous knowledge and how scientific expertise can contribute to identifying marketable products, adding value and finding the proper markets to return the benefits to the producers.ĪFS can be profitable at small, medium and large scales if products and services are given their proper monetary recognition. The chapters present conceptual aspects and case studies ranging from traditional to more modern approaches, from tropical and temperate regions of the world. ![]() ![]() The book focuses on the functions that agroforestry systems (AFS) can provide when well designed and implemented: their role in rural development as they can improve food sovereignty and contribute to provision of energy for the smallholders and their environmental functions: contribution to biodiversity conservation, to increased connectivity of fragmented landscapes, and adaptation and mitigation of climate change. This book gathers fresh and novel contributions from a set of Yale University researchers and associates from the academic, practitioner and development arenas, who intend to provide alternative and sometimes departing insights into some of the pressing environmental and development issues the world is facing today. ![]()
